Thank you for showing an interest in the University of the Third Age (Pyrénées Orientales). The U3A (PO) has evolved into a successful, and I hope, happy mix of English-speaking residents of this lovely area of France.

Our membership comprises many nationalities, with both full and part time residents.

We continue to keep the structure as simple as possible. Our Committee oversees and guides those who are the real backbone of the U3A(PO) – the group co-ordinators and facilitators, who ensure that the groups are run efficiently and pleasurably while still upholding the objectives and principles of our U3A, which are:

  1. To advance the cultural and educational interests of its members.
  2. To provide leisure and recreational activities in order to improve the conditions of life and social welfare of its members.

Within our groups we aim to be non-judgemental; we all respect the views  and accept the differences of others, treat each other with respect and courtesy.

As each activity has its own identity, we feel that it is not helpful to have stringent rules and regulations, but to be successful we really need everyone to be an active participator. Contributions obviously vary but we ask all members to think about what their contribution can be to make it all run smoothly. Hosting a meeting, providing lifts and refreshments are now basic elements within each group, but it is possible to take that one step further. We need members to take on the responsibility to organise and maybe lead particular sessions, otherwise all the responsibility falls on the same shoulders. Please don’t always leave it to someone else. What will you bring to the U3A(PO)?

We remain, as we started: simply a group of friends who are trying hard to help our fellow members enjoy life to the full.

Our U3A is non-profit making and self-funding. We have an annual membership fee of 10 Euros per person, 20 Euros per couple. On joining it is 15 Euros which includes a 5 Euro administration fee. The membership year runs from 1 June to 31 May. The membership fee is non-refundable. This pays for the running costs of the U3A.

We plan several social events during the year as well as continuing our activities and learning groups. I look forward to meeting you at some future activity.
